Borno Police Launch Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles

Maiduguri, Borno State — June 10, 2026 — In a bold bid to restore order on the roads and strip criminals of easy anonymity, the Borno State Police Command has kicked off a statewide operation against vehicles plying the roads without proper registration number plates or those with concealed, defaced, or obscured plates.

The enforcement drive, ordered directly by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, targets a long-standing security loophole in a state still grappling with the scars of insurgency and other criminal threats.

Untraceable vehicles have often enabled hit-and-run incidents, smuggling, and quick escapes, leaving residents uneasy even during routine travel.

Not Harassment, But Necessary Enforcement

Commissioner of Police Naziru Abdulmajid made it clear the operation is about public safety, not punishment. Speaking through the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, the CP described the move as “a strategic crime prevention measure” designed to enhance intelligence gathering and overall security.

Vehicle owners and drivers have been urged to immediately regularize their documents and ensure their number plates are clearly visible and compliant with the law.

Those with tampered or covered plates are being given time to comply before facing full legal consequences.

“This operation will be carried out professionally, fairly, and in accordance with extant laws and regulations,” ASP Daso assured the public, appealing for understanding and cooperation from all road users.

A Human Cost to Unchecked Vehicles

For families in Borno, where every journey carries an undercurrent of risk, this initiative brings a measure of relief.

Parents sending children to school, traders moving goods, and ordinary citizens commuting to work have long worried about vehicles that seem to vanish into the shadows after causing harm.

By making number plates mandatory and visible, the police hope to rebuild trust and make the roads feel safer for everyone.
