Joint Forces Rescue Kidnap Victims, Nab Bandits in Ekiti Forest
Ekiti State, Nigeria—June 10, 2026— In a swift joint operation that brought relief to terrified families, troops of the Nigerian Army and police personnel rescued two kidnapped victims and arrested two suspected bandits in a forest bordering Ekiti State.
Tragically, the mission claimed the life of a dedicated police inspector who collapsed while serving in the line of duty.
The operation was triggered by a distress call from residents of Irele Community in Oye Local Government Area, who reported armed bandits operating in a nearby forest.
Responding promptly, troops from the 148 Battalion Forward Operating Base, alongside officers from the 33 Police Mobile Force Squadron deployed in the Oke Ako-Irele axis, mobilized to the scene.
According to security sources, the joint team advanced into the forest and engaged about eight armed bandits wielding AK-47 rifles.
A fierce gun battle erupted, forcing the criminals to abandon their captives and flee deeper into the bush, some possibly sustaining gunshot wounds.
The rescued victims, identified as Blessing Kingsley and Yofa Solomon, both from Ikoyi in Kogi State, were found unharmed and immediately freed. Security forces also arrested two suspected bandits named Abubakar and Abu Zaidi.
Items recovered from the scene included an AK-47 rifle dust cover, a cleaning rod, and assorted charms. The suspects and exhibits have been handed over to the military for further investigation.
A Hero’s Sacrifice
The success of the operation was overshadowed by heartbreak. Inspector Obanobi Ajayi, attached to the Police Mobile Force, reportedly collapsed during the mission.
He was quickly evacuated to the Federal Medical Centre in Ikole-Ekiti but was pronounced dead on arrival. His service rifle was recovered intact.
Authorities have commended the bravery and professionalism of the joint team, noting that the operation successfully disrupted criminal activities in the area and restored some sense of security to local residents. Investigations into the incident and the arrested suspects are ongoing.
This incident highlights both the persistent threat of banditry and kidnapping in parts of Nigeria’s southwest and the relentless efforts of security forces to protect civilians.
For the families of Blessing Kingsley and Yofa Solomon, today marks a moment of profound gratitude amid a dangerous reality that continues to test Nigeria’s resolve against insecurity.
