Ado Ekiti, Nigeria - A fresh wave of political tension swept through Ekiti State on Saturday as Deputy Governorship candidate, Ogunsakin, launched a scathing attack on Governor Biodun Oyebanji, accusing the administration of allegedly harassing opposition figures ahead of the next electoral contest.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Wole Oluyede Campaign Office in Ajilosun, Ado-Ekiti, Ogunsakin urged the governor to focus on governance rather than what he described as attempts to intimidate political opponents.

According to him, democracy thrives when divergent voices are allowed to operate freely without fear of persecution or political victimization.

He warned that efforts to suppress opposition activities could undermine public confidence in the democratic process.

“Prepare for defeat and stop harassing members of the opposition,” Ogunsakin declared before supporters and party loyalists.

“No incumbent government remains in power forever. History has shown that many sitting governors and political leaders have lost elections despite controlling the machinery of government.”

The opposition figure argued that the electorate, rather than state power, ultimately determines the outcome of elections.

He maintained that growing dissatisfaction among sections of the population could significantly influence future voting patterns in the state.

Ogunsakin further alleged that opposition members have been subjected to various forms of pressure aimed at weakening their political activities.

While he did not provide specific details of the alleged incidents during the briefing, he called on security agencies and electoral stakeholders to remain neutral and ensure a level playing field for all political actors.

The remarks come amid increasing political maneuvering and early campaign activities across Ekiti State as parties position themselves for upcoming electoral battles.

Political observers note that public exchanges between the ruling party and opposition figures have become more frequent in recent months, reflecting the heightened political atmosphere.

Supporters at the gathering applauded Ogunsakin’s remarks, describing them as a call for democratic fairness and accountability.

However, members of the ruling camp have consistently maintained that Governor Oyebanji’s administration remains focused on governance, infrastructure development, and delivering on its promises to the people of Ekiti State.

As political activities intensify, analysts believe the coming months could witness sharper debates over governance, performance, and the future direction of the state.

Whether the opposition’s criticisms will resonate with voters remains to be seen, but the latest comments underscore the growing political contest taking shape ahead of the next election.
