Abuja, Nigeria—October 27, 2026—The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction backed by Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for blaming the opposition for Nigeria’s hunger and poverty.

The party’s response followed Tinubu’s remarks on Saturday at the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna, where he said his administration was “trying to eradicate” the hardship “created by his opponents.”

“I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did. They created the hunger; they created the poverty. We are trying to eradicate it,” the President told supporters.

PDP’s Firm Rejection

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the Wike-aligned PDP described Tinubu’s comments as “attempts to evade responsibility and divert public attention from the pressing challenges facing the country under the APC-led administration.”

Mohammed acknowledged some achievements of the current government but rejected any attempt to use the PDP’s 16 years in power (1999–2015) as a “blanket justification” for the present administration’s shortcomings.

“After more than APC’s 10 years in office, Nigerians deserve answers, not excuses,” the statement said. “The APC must tell Nigerians what it has achieved, outline the concrete measures it is taking to address the country’s present-day challenges, and demonstrate its commitment to improving the welfare of citizens rather than continually dragging the PDP into its own shortcomings.”

Call for Solutions Over Blame

The PDP urged the ruling party to focus on practical steps that would make food affordable, support farmers, strengthen local food production, create jobs, improve security, fight corruption, enhance electricity supply, reduce transportation costs, and restore the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

“Our message to the APC is simple: stop the blame game and start taking responsibility. Nigerians deserve solutions, not excuses,” Mohammed declared.

He added that the growing desire among Nigerians for a return to PDP leadership reflects their yearning for better governance, improved living conditions, and a more secure and prosperous country.

The statement comes amid heightened political tension as parties gear up for the 2027 general elections, with economic hardship remaining a central campaign issue.
