Kaduna, Nigeria—October 24, 2026—Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday appealed to voters in northern Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, arguing that the President has consistently stood by the region and its leaders over the years.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna, Shettima declared that Tinubu “fought for you” and therefore deserved the North’s continued backing.

Tinubu’s Past Support for Northern Leaders

Shettima recalled that when former Vice President Atiku Abubakar faced political challenges and was forced out of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tinubu provided him with political refuge and a platform to contest the 2007 presidential election.

He further noted that Tinubu supported Mallam Nuhu Ribadu’s presidential ambition in 2011 and stood solidly behind the late President Muhammadu Buhari in both the 2015 and 2019 elections, helping secure Buhari’s second-term victory.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one person who has quite clearly identified with the North over the years,” Shettima said.

He described the President’s longstanding political loyalty and developmental interventions as sufficient justification for the region to renew his mandate.

Call for Continuity and Appreciation

The Vice President urged northerners to reciprocate Tinubu’s support as a matter of honour, political loyalty and appreciation.

He also called on voters to renew the mandates of APC candidates at all levels, including Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

Shettima highlighted federal interventions in the North, including education projects, infrastructure such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, road and rail corridors, and programmes supporting farmers and students through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The campaign flag-off in Kaduna marks the formal start of the APC’s nationwide push for Tinubu’s second term under the “Renewed Hope 2.0” agenda.

This report is based on statements by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the APC presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna on October 24, 2026.
