Atiku, Obi, Duke, Makinde Face Coalition Pressure as Opposition Plots 2027 Comeback
Abuja, NigeriaβOctober 14, 2026βSix opposition political parties have consulted five presidential candidates in a fresh push to strengthen cooperation and present a more coordinated challenge ahead of the 2027 general election.
The consultations, which took place at different times over the past two weeks, involved the national chairmen and national secretaries of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by Salihu Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the meetings involved Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, Seyi Makinde of the APM, Peter Obi of the NDC, Adewole Adebayo of the SDP and Donald Duke of the PRP.
Building on G100 Resolutions
The engagements were held in furtherance of the resolutions of the G100 opposition summit, which called for sustained dialogue, stronger cooperation and a coordinated approach among opposition parties.
βThe consultations represent a practical step towards giving effect to those resolutions,β the statement said. βThey provide an opportunity for party leaders and presidential candidates to deliberate on the framework for opposition cooperation, identify areas of common ground and consider the steps necessary to advance a shared democratic agenda ahead of 2027.β
The coalition stressed that the discussions underscored the need for political leaders to work across party lines to address Nigeriaβs challenges and protect the credibility of elections.
It added that Nigerians deserve leaders who place the countryβs future and citizensβ welfare above narrow interests.
Talks Still Ongoing
Lukman noted that the consultations remain ongoing, with further engagements expected to build on the G100 resolutions.
βNigerians will be informed of substantive decisions and agreed next steps as the deliberations progress,β he said.
The move comes as opposition forces continue efforts to avoid a fragmented challenge against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
While no agreement on a single candidate has been announced, the talks signal a renewed attempt to find common ground among major opposition figures.
Political observers say the outcome of these consultations could shape the strength and unity of the opposition as the race for the presidency intensifies.
