Abuja, Nigeriaβ€”October 15, 2026β€”Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has explained that a shared vision for the country made it straightforward for leaders from the South and the North to join forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso said the alignment with presidential candidate Peter Obi was driven by common aspirations rather than political convenience.

β€œWe realized all our vision for the country was similar, and it was very easy for us to work together as leaders from the South and the North to ensure the success of the party and, by extension, the success of this country,” he stated.

Building a North-South Bridge

The former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement described the partnership as a practical step toward uniting Nigerians across regional lines.

He noted that the similarity in their thinking on national issues removed barriers that often complicate such coalitions.

Kwankwaso’s comments come as the NDC continues to position the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a major opposition force.

The party has zoned its 2027 presidential slot to the South, with an understanding that the North would take the ticket in 2031, reflecting a deliberate effort at rotational balance and national cohesion.

Context of the Alliance

The former governor has previously said extensive consultations with the Kwankwasiyya Movement, NNPP supporters, and the Obidient Movement informed the decision.

Supporters of the ticket see it as a way to combine Obi’s strong youth and southern base with Kwankwaso’s deep northern grassroots networks.

As the 2027 race gathers pace, Kwankwaso’s remarks underscore the NDC’s strategy of presenting a united front that prioritizes shared national goals over regional or party differences.

The interview forms part of ongoing efforts by the ticket to explain its vision and expand its appeal across the country.
