Jos, Plateau State—October 9, 2026— A farmer identified as Babangida Atah was injured in a machete attack allegedly carried out by Fulani herders at Rafi Katako village in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, security sources have confirmed.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, while Atah was working on his farmland. Troops of Sector 1, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), deployed in nearby Jengre, received a distress report and quickly moved to the location.

Upon arrival, the soldiers found the farmer with machete wounds. The suspected attackers had already fled the scene.

Atah was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Photographs circulating from the scene show visible injuries to his head and a bandaged arm.

Security personnel have launched efforts to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspects for investigation and possible prosecution. Further details are expected as the manhunt continues.

Context of Persistent Tensions

This attack adds to a series of isolated but troubling incidents involving farmers and herders in parts of Plateau State in recent months.

Security forces under Operation Enduring Peace have remained active across several local government areas, responding to reports of farm invasions, assaults, and livestock-related disputes.

While the exact circumstances of the confrontation at Rafi Katako remain under investigation, the swift military response prevented further escalation at the scene.

Authorities have urged residents in Bassa and surrounding communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements promptly.

The Plateau State Government and security agencies continue to call for calm and cooperation as efforts to restore lasting peace in the region persist.

No official statement from the state government or police command had been released at the time of filing this report. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
