Abuja, Nigeriaβ€”October 9, 2026β€”In a clear signal that the welfare of personnel remains central to operational readiness, the Commander of the Guards Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Adebisi Olusegun Onasanya, on Friday paid a courtesy visit to the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) in Abuja.

The visit, according to an official statement released by Headquarters Guards Brigade, was aimed at deepening institutional collaboration and expanding access to specialized healthcare for officers and soldiers of the Brigade.

Brigadier General Onasanya emphasized that fostering strong relationships with key institutions within the Brigade’s Area of Responsibility is essential.

He stressed that the health, well-being, and quality of life of troops whose duties demand physical resilience, mental strength, and personal sacrifice cannot be separated from their ability to perform effectively.

β€œThe relationship with AMCE is expected to provide a stronger platform for healthcare collaboration, medical referrals, and access to specialized medical expertise for personnel and, where applicable, their families,” the statement noted.

Beyond ranks and uniforms, the partnership is framed as something more fundamental: the preservation of lives. Every soldier who receives prompt, quality medical care is a life protected, a family sustained, and a critical member of Nigeria’s security architecture kept ready for duty.

The Guards Brigade is the Nigerian Army formation charged with the security of the President and other key national assets within its Area of Responsibility.

Maintaining high operational readiness while ensuring personnel receive adequate support remains a dual priority for the command.

The African Medical Centre of Excellence, a tertiary-level multi-specialty hospital developed by the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in partnership with King’s College Hospital, London, has rapidly established itself as a regional hub for advanced care since opening in June 2025.

The facility offers specialized services in oncology, cardiovascular care, hematology, and general medicine and has already treated thousands of patients from across Africa and beyond while performing complex procedures, including open-heart surgeries.

Previous high-level engagements, including visits by the Minister of Defence, have underscored growing interest in leveraging AMCE’s capabilities to improve healthcare outcomes for military personnel and reduce reliance on overseas medical treatment.

The courtesy call also opened discussions on deeper, mutually beneficial cooperation in healthcare delivery. For the Guards Brigade, the partnership ultimately ensures that those who stand in defence of the nation have a strong medical institution standing with them when they need it most.

The statement was signed by Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade.
