Abuja, Nigeriaβ€”October 5, 2026β€”The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has formally transferred ownership of Safeline Microfinance Bank (SMFB) to ROBOPAY NIG. LTD., marking a significant restructuring of the institution it established more than a decade ago.

The share transfer ceremony took place on Monday, 5 October 2026, at the bank’s premises in Abuja. Officials described the move as a strategic step toward enhanced capitalization, digital transformation, and sustainable growth for the microfinance lender.

Why the Board Decided to Divest

Engr. Ibrahim Babagana, fwc, retired Deputy Corps Marshal and Chairman of the Safeline Microfinance Bank Board, explained that the decision followed careful review of the prevailing regulatory environment and emerging government policies affecting the microfinance banking sector.

Sustaining the bank under the evolving financial landscape, he said, would require significant additional capital injection, substantial investment in technology, and the strengthening of its human capital.

The Board therefore considered it necessary to place the institution in the hands of an investor with the capacity and willingness to make those investments and drive long-term sustainability.

Babagana expressed confidence in the new owners, noting that ROBOPAY NIG. LTD. had demonstrated the competence, commitment, and vision required to build on the foundation laid by the FRSC.

He highlighted the company’s particular focus on strengthening the bank’s capital base, deploying modern technology, and investing in human resourcesβ€”factors he described as critical for remaining competitive in an increasingly digital financial environment.

New Owners Outline Ambitions

Speaking on behalf of ROBOPAY NIG. LTD., Malam Aliyu Abiodun thanked the Board and Management of Safeline Microfinance Bank for the confidence reposed in the company.

He described the acquisition as a major milestone and an opportunity to unlock the institution’s significant potential.

Abiodun noted that Safeline already possesses valuable assets, structures, and an institutional foundation. ROBOPAY, he said, intends to deploy financial technology (FinTech) alongside strategic investments in capital, technology, and human resources to transform operations, enhance service delivery, and expand the bank’s competitiveness.

He assured stakeholders that the new ownership would leverage the existing foundation established by the FRSC while introducing innovative solutions capable of repositioning the bank for a stronger presence in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving financial services sector.

Background of Safeline Microfinance Bank

Safeline Microfinance Bank traces its roots to FRSC staff cooperative societies formed as far back as 1986. The Corps later applied through the FRSC Staff Cooperative Society Limited to establish a full microfinance bank.

The Central Bank of Nigeria granted approval in principle in July 2009 and final approval to commence business in February 2010.

The bank officially began operations on 2 March 2010 after commissioning by the then Honourable Minister of Finance.

Originally set up to serve FRSC personnel and other stakeholders, the bank has over the years expanded its reach while maintaining its institutional links to the Corps.

A New Chapter Begins

Both parties emphasized that the transfer represents more than a change of ownership. It signals a deliberate shift toward a technology-driven and investment-led future for Safeline Microfinance Bank.

Officials expressed commitment to a seamless transition and to ensuring the institution emerges stronger, more competitive and better positioned to deliver sustainable value to customers and stakeholders.

The development forms part of broader efforts under the current FRSC leadership to reposition the bank for greater competitiveness in Nigeria’s dynamic financial landscape.
