Nigerian soldiers operating under Joint Task Force (North West) — codenamed Operation Fansan Yamma — have scored two significant security wins across the north-west region, arresting a suspected arms courier with over a thousand rounds of ammunition concealed in a food sack and rescuing 53 stolen cattle from armed rustlers.

The Ammunition Bust: Weapons Hidden in Plain Sight

It started with a routine checkpoint stop — but what soldiers found inside the vehicle was anything but routine.

On June 5, troops from Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma manning a checkpoint in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State, flagged down a vehicle heading towards Shinkafi Local Government Area.

A standard search of the car quickly turned into a major discovery: buried inside an ordinary sack of millet were a locally fabricated pistol, a loaded magazine, and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect, identified as Mustapha Abubakar, 42, was immediately taken into custody.

Military spokesperson Lt. Col. Aliyu Danja confirmed that preliminary investigations suggest Abubakar was not acting alone — he was allegedly transporting the weapons to an accomplice, and is strongly believed to be part of a network supplying arms to terrorists active in the region.

The suspect is believed to be involved in the illegal movement of arms and ammunition to terrorists operating in the region,” Danja said in a statement released Friday.

The recovered weapons and ammunition have been secured, and investigation is ongoing.

The Cattle Rescue: Troops Spring a Trap on Rustlers

Two days earlier, on June 3, soldiers from Sector 1 were responding to an urgent distress call in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, where a herder reported that armed criminals had stolen his cattle.

Moving quickly, the troops didn’t chase the suspects blindly — they studied the terrain and positioned themselves strategically along the rustlers’ most likely escape route. The calculation paid off.

When the armed criminals attempted to move the stolen herd out of the area, they walked straight into the waiting soldiers. A firefight broke out, and when the dust settled, the rustlers had fled and all 53 stolen cattle were recovered and returned.

The Bigger Picture: A Region Under Pressure

These operations are part of a sustained military campaign to dismantle the terrorist and criminal networks that have plagued Nigeria’s north-west for years.

Banditry, arms trafficking, and cattle rustling have fuelled a cycle of violence in states like Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, and Sokoto — displacing thousands of rural communities and crippling livelihoods.

The Theatre Command praised the troops for their vigilance and professionalism in both operations, while also calling on residents to remain active partners in the fight against insecurity.

We urge residents to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies,” Danja said.

For communities living under the shadow of armed violence, operations like these offer a rare but welcome signal — that the security forces are watching, and closing in.
