President Bola Tinubu on Saturday turned the heat on his political rivals as he formally kicked off the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign in Kaduna, accusing them of creating the hunger and poverty that now weigh heavily on Nigerian families.

Speaking before a large crowd at the Ranchers Bees Stadium, also known as Kaduna Township Stadium, the President pushed back against growing criticism of the cost-of-living crisis. β€œ

I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did. They created the hunger, they created the poverty. We are trying to eradicate it,” he declared.

Tinubu said his government was focused on fixing the problems rather than scoring political points. He pointed to regular payment of salaries and the work being done by APC governors across the country.

β€œWe pay salaries regularly. Our governors are working. I am proud of them. They are developing,” he told the cheering supporters.

The President thanked the people of Kaduna for the role they played in his 2023 victory and appealed for another chance.

He promised that a second term would deliver prosperity, continuity and real progress, especially for the younger generation. β€œTo you, the children of our country, it’s a promise of a second term β€” prosperity; you will not regret going to the votes,” he said.

Tinubu urged party faithful to secure their Permanent Voter Cards and turn out in large numbers on 16 January 2027. He called on them to vote for APC candidates at every levelβ€”from the presidency down to the state Houses of Assembly.

He also dismissed opposition messages, arguing that his rivals had little to offer beyond criticism and bitterness, while his administration was offering recovery, growth and opportunity.

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric. Party supporters filled the stands, waving flags and chanting as the President arrived with Vice President Kashim Shettima and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who hosted the event, described Tinubu as a leader who keeps his word. He highlighted the ongoing reconstruction of the long-abandoned Kaduna–Birnin Gwari road and the reopening of schools and primary healthcare centres that had been shut by insecurity.

The Kaduna rally marked the official national flag-off of the APC’s presidential campaign. With the election just months away, Tinubu’s sharp response on the economy has set a clear tone for the contest ahead.
