Tinubu Gets WACP Fellowship, Tasks Doctors on Brain Drain
Abuja, NigeriaβOctober 22, 2026βPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday received the Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (WACP) at the State House and challenged medical experts to develop practical solutions to the persistent problem of brain drain in the health sector across West Africa.
The President took the oath of fellowship shortly before addressing the college leadership. He noted that the migration of skilled medical professionals continues to place heavy pressure on healthcare systems in the sub-region, limiting access to essential services and increasing the workload on remaining personnel.
βWe are more challenged in Africa than anywhere elseβ¦ and with the outbreak of Ebola now, weβre looking for a preventive action that will eliminate all these problems and infections.
So, I wish you the best. As I pledge to behave myself, I will continue to do whatever I can do for this honorable profession,β Tinubu said.
Rare Honour for Health Leadership
The College conferred the fellowship in recognition of the Presidentβs contributions to health sector reforms and medical development in Nigeria.
According to College President and Board of Trustees Chairman Dr Mamadou Mourtala Ka, the award is given only to presidents who have made a significant mark on healthcare delivery and the health of West African people.
Professor Musa Dankyau, Secretary-General of the WACP, noted that the college has awarded the fellowship only eight times in its 50-year history.
The first recipient was former Gambian President Dawda Jawara, while former Nigerian Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida remains the only previous Nigerian recipient, in 1991.
Dankyau highlighted the administrationβs investments, stating that over $2.2 billion had been committed to the health of Nigerians, alongside progress in disease prevention, immunization, and public health preparedness. He also referenced recent assurances of readiness to confront Ebola.
Reaffirming Health Sector Commitment
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administrationβs determination to drive comprehensive reforms that make healthcare more accessible, affordable, and efficient for all Nigerians.
He acknowledged the critical role of medical professionals in research, disease prevention, life-saving interventions, and building resilient systems capable of responding to both emerging and existing health challenges.
The ceremony was attended by key officials including Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen. George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, and other senior government figures.
The President thanked the college for the honor and urged its leadership to use the forthcoming conference to produce sustainable answers to the brain drain challenge confronting the region.
This report is based on the official State House press release issued by Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy) Bayo Onanuga on October 22, 2026.
