Ebonyi’s Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate, Ifeanyi Odii, has accused Governor Francis Nwifuru of intimidating opposition parties and creating a climate of fear ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Arise TV on Thursday, Odii alleged that supporters of opposition parties have been attacked in parts of the state simply for campaigning.

He further claimed that the governor has threatened local government chairpersons who allow opposition parties to hold rallies or mobilise in their area councils, warning that such officials risk losing their positions.

“It is unconstitutional,” the PDP candidate declared. Odii argued that a governor, as the chief security officer of the state, has a constitutional duty to protect lives and property rather than issue threats that could suppress legitimate political activity.

He suggested the alleged threats stem from panic and jitteriness over his growing connection with the masses.

The remarks come against a backdrop of heightened political tension in Ebonyi. The PDP has previously petitioned security agencies over what it described as threats and combative rhetoric from the governor, including earlier comments directed at local government officials.

Odii has also repeatedly dismissed speculation that he might step down for Nwifuru, insisting he remains fully committed to the race and focused on addressing poverty and improving governance.

As campaign activities intensify, Odii’s latest accusations underline the deepening rivalry between the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition PDP in the state.

Security agencies and political stakeholders are likely to face growing pressure to ensure a level playing field and peaceful electoral process as 2027 approaches.
