Lokoja, Nigeria—October 14, 2026—The Force Commander of Operation Whirl Stroke and General Officer Commanding 5 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General MK Gara, has commended Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard for its operational achievements.

The commendation came during a familiarization visit to the naval base in Kogi State on 13 October 2026. Gara, who also serves as Force Commander of the multi-agency Joint Task Force Operation Whirl Stroke covering Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, and parts of Kogi, used the visit to recognize the ship’s contributions to joint security efforts in the region.

Focus on Professionalism and Joint Operations

During the engagement, the senior army officer tasked personnel of NNS Lugard to maintain the highest standards of professionalism.

He stressed the importance of continued dedication in supporting broader efforts to tackle insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities that have plagued the North-Central zone.

NNS Lugard, based in the Banda area of Lokoja, plays a key role in riverine and inland waterway security along the River Niger corridor.

The base contributes to inter-agency operations under the Operation Whirl Stroke framework, which draws personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, police, and other security agencies.

Strengthening Inter-Service Collaboration

The visit underscores the growing emphasis on joint operations and synergy among the armed forces and security agencies.

Operation Whirl Stroke has recorded notable successes in recent months, including the rescue of hundreds of kidnapped victims and the neutralization of criminal elements across its area of responsibility.

Major General Gara’s recognition of NNS Lugard highlights the value of naval contributions to land-focused internal security operations, particularly in states with significant waterways and riverine terrain.

The Nigerian Navy continues to support multi-agency efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the North-Central region while fulfilling its primary mandate of protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests.

This report is based on official updates released by the Nigerian Navy on 14 October 2026.
