17 Brigade Commander Leads Tree-Planting Drive Against Desert Heat
Katsina, NigeriaβOctober 12, 2026βThe 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army on Monday carried out a tree-planting exercise at its Headquarters Complex in Natsinta Cantonment, Katsina, underscoring the militaryβs growing commitment to environmental sustainability alongside its security responsibilities.
The exercise was led by the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim, who was joined by the Chief of Staff, the Commanding Officer of 35 Battalion, the Commander of 17 Brigade Garrison, senior officers, and other personnel of the formation.
According to a statement by Captain Abayomi Adisa, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 17 Brigade, the initiative seeks to promote environmental sustainability, enhance the greenery of the brigadeβs premises, and instill a culture of conservation among troops.
Benefits Highlighted by the Commander
Speaking during the exercise, Brigadier General Ibrahim explained that trees play a vital role in improving air quality, reducing environmental heat, providing shade, and enhancing the overall well-being of personnel.
He noted that trees absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, help reduce dust and air pollution, and act as natural windbreakers that protect the environment from strong winds.
βThe initiative will contribute to a healthier, safer and more environmentally friendly working environment within the Brigade,β the commander said.
He emphasised that the exercise reflects the 17 Brigadeβs dedication to personnel welfare and sustainable environmental practices.
Context of a Greener Katsina
The military exercise comes at a time when Katsina State is intensifying efforts against desertification and climate change.
The state government has launched large-scale tree-planting campaigns, including the Katsina One-Person-One-Tree (KT1T) initiative, which targets millions of trees in the coming years.
The 17th Brigade, headquartered at Natsinta Cantonment, recently returned under the command of the premier 1 Division as part of the Nigerian Armyβs broader restructuring.
The formation has previously engaged in community-support activities, including farm protection patrols and distribution of agricultural inputs to neighboring communities.
A Symbol of Commitment
Photographs from the event show officers and soldiers actively participating in planting and watering young seedlings, creating a visible demonstration of the brigadeβs dual focus on operational readiness and environmental stewardship.
Military observers note that such non-kinetic initiatives help strengthen civil-military relations while addressing practical challenges such as rising temperatures and environmental degradation in the North-West region.
The 17 Brigadeβs tree-planting exercise sends a clear message: the Nigerian Army is not only securing communities but also investing in a healthier and more sustainable future for its personnel and the environment they serve in.
