Imo Police Arrest Inspector and Two Guards Over Viral Motorist Extortion Video
Owerri, Imo StateβOctober 10, 2026βThe Imo State Police Command has acted swiftly after a video of alleged extortion and harassment of a motorist went viral, detaining a police inspector and two personnel of the State Civil Guard Corps.
The incident, which occurred on October 8 in Owerri, the state capital, showed the officers confronting a driver they accused of operating without a valid driverβs license.
In the widely circulated clip, the personnel appear to struggle with the motorist over the steering wheel while allegedly demanding money.
Officers Identified and Detained
Police Public Relations Officer DSP Henry Okoye identified the police officer as Inspector Chinewe Ejiogu, attached to the Shell Camp Divisional Police Headquarters.
The two State Civil Guard Corps personnel were named as Kelechi Nzediagwu and Onyedikachi Chibuike.
All three are currently detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) as investigations continue.
Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso has condemned the conduct captured in the video, describing it as βunacceptable and contrary to the standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism expected of law enforcement personnel.β
He directed the Commandβs Complaint Response Unit (CRU) to conduct a thorough investigation.
Police Statement and Appeal to Victim
In an official statement, Okoye stressed that no traffic violation justifies extortion, harassment, or abuse of office.
The command urged the affected motorist to report to the Complaint Response Unit and provide information that could assist the probe.
Appropriate disciplinary action, the police said, will follow the conclusion of the investigation.
Some accounts circulating alongside the video claimed the officers demanded sums ranging from β¦15,000 to β¦35,000, though these figures remain unverified pending the official inquiry.
A Familiar Problem, a Visible Response
Extortion allegations involving security personnel have long strained public trust in Nigeria. In this case, the rapid identification and detention of the officers involved has been noted by residents as a positive step toward accountability.
The command further warned its personnel to discharge their duties in accordance with the law and treat members of the public with respect, while encouraging citizens to report misconduct through official channels.
As the investigation proceeds, attention will now turn to whether the case results in meaningful disciplinary measures and whether the victimβs account strengthens the evidence against the detained officers.
The Imo State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to upholding professional standards and protecting the rights of citizens.
