Atiku Abubakar Slams Tinubu’s One-Month Petrol Discount as Outright Deception Ahead of 2027
Abuja, Nigeria—October 9, 2026—Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the Federal Government’s newly announced 30-day petrol discount, describing it as “outright deception” designed to offer only short-term relief while leaving the underlying cost-of-living crisis unresolved.
In a widely circulated video statement credited to DCL Hausa and shared by ADC-aligned accounts, Atiku declared: “There is outright deception behind Tinubu’s plan to reduce petrol prices for just one month.”
The remarks form part of a broader rejection of the policy, which the government says will see Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) retail stations sell petrol at cost—reported around ₦1,350 per liter—for an initial 30 days, with priority for public transport operators.
Government’s Position Versus Opposition Critique
Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele announced the measure, stressing it is not a return to the petrol subsidy removed in May 2023.
The Presidency has defended the arrangement as a temporary step to cushion the impact of global crude oil price volatility on households, with NNPC forgoing its retail margin. Officials say the price will be reviewed monthly.
Atiku, however, dismissed the intervention as a “panic-driven publicity stunt” and a “calendar-scheduled, election-laced subsidy package.”
In a statement issued by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, he argued that Nigerians who have endured years of high fuel prices, soaring transport fares, and rising food costs cannot be expected to treat a one-month discount as a genuine solution.
“What happens on Day 31? Nigerians wake up to the same brutal prices, the same punishing transport fares and the same rising cost of food. The government cannot manufacture relief for one month and expect Nigerians to applaud while the hardship remains,” Atiku said.
He further described the move as “shameless and heartless,” insisting citizens need lasting relief rather than a countdown to the return of hardship.
Broader Opposition Pushback and Policy Context
The criticism has been echoed by other opposition voices, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), elements of the Obidient Movement, and the presidential campaign organization of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
They have labelled the discount inadequate, selective (limited mainly to NNPC stations, which represent a fraction of the country’s filling stations), and politically timed ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku also linked the development to his earlier proposals for a production-based support mechanism aimed at making domestically refined petrol more affordable. He argued that the government’s temporary intervention proves such measures are workable, despite previous official resistance to his ideas.
Petrol prices have remained elevated for many Nigerians since the 2023 subsidy removal, with recent figures in some locations hovering near or above ₦1,350–₦1,470 per litre depending on location and market conditions.
Critics question whether the limited 30-day window and restriction to NNPC outlets will meaningfully ease pressure on transporters and ordinary motorists, or whether savings will be passed on to passengers through lower fares.
What Comes Next
As the discount takes effect, attention will focus on its actual reach, impact on pump prices and transport costs, and whether the government extends or adjusts the arrangement after the initial period.
Atiku and other opposition figures continue to press for more structural, longer-term solutions rather than time-bound interventions.
The exchange underscores the sharp political contest already underway over economic hardship and energy policy as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 elections.
