Wike Stakes Cabinet Seat: Vows Resignation If Tinubu Loses Rivers and FCT in 2027
Abuja/Port Harcourt β October 3, 2026 β In a bold and high-stakes political declaration, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly tied his continued stay in President Bola Tinubuβs cabinet to the outcome of the 2027 presidential election in two critical territories: Rivers State and the FCT.
Speaking with characteristic force, Wike stated that if Tinubu does not win Rivers on January 16, 2027, he would announce his resignation the following day.
In related remarks, he extended the same accountability to the FCT, where he currently serves as minister, saying he would not consider himself worthy of the office if he failed to deliver the capital.
βIβm sure he appointed me not just because of infrastructure, knowing I have political capacity,β Wike said in a widely circulated video. βWe want to compete with Lagosβletβs see the votes Lagos will bring, and letβs see the votes Rivers will bring.β
A Personal Political Bet
Wike framed the pledge as a matter of personal responsibility and political integrity. βIf I cannot deliver where I work, then Iβm not worthy to be here,β he declared. βIf I lose FCT, Iβm not supposed to be FCT Minister. By January 17, 2027, I will announce my resignation as FCT Minister should the President lose in Rivers State and the FCT.β
The statement, first made during an engagement with the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association in Abuja and later reinforced in Rivers State, has been widely reported across Nigerian media.
It comes as Wike intensifies grassroots mobilization for Tinubuβs re-election bid while remaining a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.
Building a Cross-Party Coalition
Beyond the resignation threat, Wike outlined plans for a multi-party βRainbow Coalitionβ in the FCT aimed at delivering votes for Tinubu and selected legislative candidates.
He publicly endorsed former Senate Leader Philip Aduda for the Senate and two former Area Council chairmen for the House of Representatives, stressing that the coalition would cut across traditional party lines.
In Rivers State, the former governor has been holding consultative meetings with political stakeholders, traditional rulers, and community leaders, urging them to set aside differences and mobilize for the president.
He has repeatedly described his return to active politics in the state as driven by a desire to βraise his peopleβ rather than personal gain.
High Stakes Ahead of 2027
The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16. In 2023, Tinubu won Rivers State but lost the FCT to Peter Obi.
Wikeβs pledge therefore carries significant political weightβsuccess would reinforce his influence within the Tinubu administration, while failure would force him out of one of the most powerful ministerial portfolios in the country.
Political observers note that the declaration raises the bar for other allies of the president and places Wikeβs much-vaunted political machinery under intense public scrutiny.
Supporters see it as a demonstration of confidence and accountability; critics view it as a calculated move to consolidate relevance ahead of the polls.
As campaign structures take shape across the country, Wikeβs self-imposed deadline of January 17, 2027, has already become one of the most closely watched political commitments of the early 2027 race.
