Abuja, Nigeria—September 26, 2026—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to grant his administration more time to address what he described as the cumulative mistakes and missed opportunities of past governments and to complete the “good work” already begun.

The appeal was delivered on his behalf by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during a special Juma’at prayer session at the National Mosque in Abuja.

The event formed part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Message of Hope and Continuity

Addressing the gathering, Abbas conveyed the President’s message that Nigeria has reached maturity after 66 years of independence, even though the journey has been a mixture of challenges and opportunities. He stressed that citizens should not lose hope.

“Peace is coming back to this country. Development is coming back to this country. Things will get better as we progress in this democracy,” the Speaker said on behalf of the President.

Tinubu, through Abbas, emphasized that his administration is deliberately correcting the accumulated errors of previous governments. “More importantly, citizens should look at the focus of the government of today, that the mistakes of the past — the cumulative mistakes and the missed opportunities of the past — are being corrected in this particular administration,” he stated.

He further declared that Nigeria is on the right path and that there is “light at the end of the tunnel,” adding that Nigerians have already made the necessary sacrifices for the country to become great again.

“We should give this government more opportunity for it to come back and finish the good work [it has started],” the President said in the appeal.

Context and Political Undertones

The remarks come against the backdrop of ongoing economic reforms introduced since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, including the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange unification.

While the government presents these as necessary corrections to long-standing structural problems, many Nigerians continue to feel the short-term pains of higher living costs.

The appeal also carries clear political weight ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the President effectively seeking a renewed mandate to continue his programmes.

Senior government officials attended the prayer session, including Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, several state governors, members of the National Assembly, ministers, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and military chiefs.

As Nigeria marks another independence milestone, Tinubu’s message seeks to reassure a public that has endured significant economic hardship while positioning his administration as the one finally addressing deep-rooted problems inherited from earlier years, including the Buhari era.

Whether the call for more time resonates with citizens will likely become clearer in the months leading to the next electoral cycle.

For now, the President has drawn a firm line: the work of correction is underway, the sacrifices have been made, and the light, he insists, is already visible at the end of the tunnel.
