Abuja, Nigeriaβ€”September 26, 2026β€”The Nigerian Navy on Saturday commissioned a newly refurbished Ante Room at the Senior Officers’ Quarters, Naval Base Abuja, in honour of the late Rear Admiral Umar Sam Ayuba (USA) Chugali.

The ceremony formed part of the ongoing welfare initiatives under the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

Senior naval officers in full ceremonial uniform cut the ribbon amid blue-and-white balloons, formally opening the comfortable lounge space designed for the use of senior personnel.

A Fitting Tribute to a Distinguished Officer

Rear Admiral USA Chugali, who hails from the Cham community in Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State, rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Navy with a reputation for quiet professionalism, humility and dedication.

He notably served as Flag Officer Commanding of the Central Naval Command in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where he led efforts against maritime crime and illegal oil refining.

Colleagues and community members have consistently described him as a gentleman officer who remained deeply connected to his roots.

Even after retirement, he continued to facilitate community development projects under the Chief of Naval Staff’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Project Scheme, including water and education facilities in his home area.

The late Rear Admiral passed away earlier in 2026. The Chief of the Naval Staff had previously issued a formal condolence message to his family, describing him as a dedicated officer whose service would not be forgotten.

Enhancing Personnel Welfare

The Ante Room, furnished with modern seating, a television, and a welcoming atmosphere, forms part of broader efforts by the current naval leadership to improve living and recreational facilities for officers and ratings across the country.

Vice Admiral Idi Abbas has prioritized personnel welfare since assuming office, commissioning housing projects, recreational centers, and other infrastructure in Abuja, Lagos, and other locations.

Officials present at the event emphasized that naming the facility after Rear Admiral Chugali serves both as a lasting memorial and a reminder of the values of service, integrity, and community that the officer embodied throughout his career.

The Nigerian Navy continues to mark such tributes as a way of preserving institutional memory while motivating serving personnel.

The commissioning of the Ante Room stands as a quiet but meaningful gesture of respect for one of its own who gave decades of service to the nation.
