Obi Declares Ready to Die Protecting 2027 Votes, Vows No More Election Rigging

Port Harcourt, Rivers State – September 4, 2026 — In a fiery and emotionally charged address that electrified supporters, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi declared he is prepared to lay down his life to protect the integrity of the 2027 elections, vowing that voter intimidation and result manipulation will no longer be tolerated.

Speaking on Thursday at a town hall meeting tagged “Obi Talks Nigeria” in Port Harcourt, Obi drew a sharp line under the controversies that trailed the 2023 general election, particularly the failures of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

“I’m Ready to Die Too”

Responding to a supporter who said they were ready to die for their votes, Obi did not hesitate. “Somebody said, ‘We are ready to die.’ Let me tell you, I’m ready to die too,” he stated firmly, framing the fight as a collective mission to rescue Nigeria.

He dismissed fears of intimidation at polling units with a practical argument that has since resonated widely: “Nobody will intimidate us again at the polling booth. If you get to any polling booth today, the highest number of officials you see is five.

The average number of voters is 40 to 50. There is no way five people will intimidate 50 people.”

Obi stressed the need for strong coordination among voters and party agents so that such pressure never arises again. “This time all of us will rescue our country,” he declared.

Countering IReV Manipulation

The former Anambra State governor was equally blunt about potential technical interference. He acknowledged that attempts to manipulate the IReV system are likely but insisted it “will not be easy this time.”

“There will be so many IReVs this time. If there is a network glitch, we will give them another one that has no glitch,” Obi said. “By allowing them to continue, that glitch will glitch our lives. That is what we are suffering today.”

The NDC, he explained, is preparing independent systems and alternative technology to flood the process with transparent results, ensuring that official portals cannot become the sole or vulnerable source of truth.

Broader Message and Context

Joined by running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rivers State governorship candidate Dumo Lulu-Briggs, and other party leaders, Obi used the platform to urge Rivers voters to turn out massively and insist that their votes must count.

In a follow-up statement, he emphasized that only leaders who emerge from free, fair, and credible polls can truly claim the title of “Excellency.”

The town hall formed part of Obi’s ongoing direct engagement with citizens ahead of the 2027 presidential race. Supporters left the event energized, with many echoing his call for vigilance and collective defence of the ballot.
