South American Cartels Eye Nigeria — Firm Blames Tinubu’s Trafficking Past
Abuja/Washington—August 29, 2026—A United States-based political advocacy firm has publicly questioned whether Nigeria is emerging as a preferred destination for South American drug cartels partly because of long-standing allegations surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s past, according to a report circulating Friday.
Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., the Washington firm retained by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, said in a post on X that the FBI was preparing to provide a US court with sensitive documents related to alleged heroin trafficking activities involving Tinubu from the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The firm also claimed members of Congress had recently been briefed on Nigeria’s drug trafficking situation and expressed concern that the country risked developing a reputation as a possible “narco state.”

The group pointed to a July 2026 congressional report describing Nigeria as a “source, transit point, and market” for illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.
It further referenced a discussion between Congressman Ronny Jackson and Dr. Karl Von Batten in which concerns were raised about Tinubu-related allegations and the possibility of Nigeria becoming a hub for South American cartels.
Importantly, the firm itself acknowledged it does not know whether any rise in cartel interest is connected to the old allegations or driven by other factors.
It said the question is one it intends to raise in further meetings with US lawmakers, arguing that the US government should examine both the broader trafficking trends and the historical claims involving the Nigerian president.
Background on the Allegations
The documents the firm has been circulating with the Trump administration and Congress relate to a 1993 US Department of Justice civil forfeiture case in Chicago.
Prosecutors at the time alleged that proceeds from a Nigeria-based heroin trafficking organization were deposited into US bank accounts linked to Tinubu and two other individuals.
Tinubu has consistently denied any wrongdoing, and the matter was a civil action over funds rather than a criminal conviction against him.
The lobbying firm has been operating under a reported $1.2 million contract with Atiku’s camp since March 2026, with a mandate that includes countering Nigerian government narratives in Washington.

Independent of the political claims, Nigerian and international authorities have documented a genuine uptick in Latin American cartel activity in West Africa.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled sophisticated methamphetamine laboratories in recent years, some involving Mexican chemists linked to groups such as the Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels.
Experts attribute the shift partly to tighter enforcement in traditional Latin American production zones and the search for shorter routes into European and Asian markets.
Nigeria has long served as a transit corridor; more recently it has also become a significant consumer market and, in some cases, a production site for synthetic drugs.

The firm’s latest comments arrive amid ongoing Freedom of Information Act litigation in the United States seeking the release of additional FBI, DEA and DOJ records related to the 1990s investigation.

As the documents move through the US system and Nigerian authorities continue their own anti-trafficking operations, the debate over the scale of cartel penetration—and any alleged historical links—looks set to intensify in both Abuja and Washington.
