Information Minister Hails IBB at 85 for Enduring Commitment to United Nigeria
Abuja, August 17, 2026—The Honorable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has congratulated former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman whose life and service occupy an important place in Nigeria’s contemporary history.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Idris said Babangida’s journey through military service, national leadership, and statesmanship represents a significant chapter in the country’s political and institutional evolution.
The minister noted that decades after leaving office, the former Military President has remained engaged with issues of national importance, particularly those concerning Nigeria’s unity, stability, and development.
He described Babangida’s experiences in leadership and public service as a valuable reservoir from which succeeding generations can draw lessons about the complexities and responsibilities of nation-building.

Babangida, popularly known as IBB, was born on August 17, 1941, in Minna, present-day Niger State. He served as Nigeria’s military Head of State from August 1985 to August 1993—an eight-year period that remains one of the most consequential and debated in the nation’s history.
His birthday attracted warm messages from across the political spectrum. President Bola Tinubu described him as a leader who “impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has,” noting that his tenure left enduring marks on the country’s political, economic, and geographic landscape, including the creation of several states.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar hailed him as a patriot and statesman whose legacy of nation-building remains indelible, urging him to continue praying for the country’s unity and prosperity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda specifically thanked Babangida for the creation of Katsina State in 1987, calling it a defining moment that opened a new chapter of development for the people.
