FRSC Jails Driver for One Month After He Flees with Marshal

Abuja, August 15, 2026 — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified its campaign against dangerous road practices after a Mobile Court in Abia State sentenced a commercial driver to one month in prison and operatives in the Federal Capital Territory uncovered 15 people and eight motorcycles dangerously hidden under a truck’s sealed covering.

In a statement signed by Corps Public Education Officer Osondu Ohaeri, the Corps said the twin operations in Abia and the FCT highlight its growing use of intelligence, professional observation, and inter-agency collaboration to stop practices that turn Nigerian roads into death traps.

Abia Driver Jailed After Escape Attempt

In Abia State, a Mobile Court presided over by His Worship C. E. Nwankpa sentenced Mr. Azubuike Dominic to one month imprisonment at Afara Correctional Centre.

Dominic was arrested for driving a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle (registration GWB 298 XY) without a valid driver’s licence.

While being escorted to court, he absconded with the FRSC arresting marshal. A coordinated pursuit involving FRSC personnel and the military led to his re-arrest several kilometres away. The court case proceeded and resulted in the jail term.

15 Passengers and Motorcycles Found Under Trampoline in FCT

In a separate intelligence-driven operation in Nyanya, FCT, FRSC marshals stopped a Mitsubishi Canter (registration GDD 815 ZP) after suspecting something was amiss with its sealed trampoline.

A closer inspection revealed 15 persons and eight motorcycles concealed among goods beneath the covering—a clear and highly dangerous violation of road safety rules.

The driver, Mr. Umar Muhammadu, allegedly offered an FRSC marshal ₦500 as an inducement and could not produce a valid driver’s licence. He was arrested.

On the directive of Sector Commander RS7.1 FCT, CC Tijjani Iliyasu, the vehicle and its occupants were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer, Mararaba, CSP M. Daniel, for further investigation and prosecution.

Strong Warning from the Corps

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed has repeatedly charged personnel to remain vigilant, professional and uncompromising.

The Corps warned commercial operators and other motorists that attempts to evade enforcement, conceal passengers or motorcycles, overload vehicles, drive without licences, or offer bribes will attract firm sanctions.

“These incidents demonstrate that enforcement is moving beyond routine interception to intelligence-led, evidence-based action,” the statement noted. “On the road to a safer Nigeria, there will be no hiding place for reckless and dangerous driving.”

The operations reinforce FRSC’s message that road safety rules exist to protect lives — both of those inside overloaded or improperly loaded vehicles and of other road users who share the highway with them.
