Abuja, Nigeria – July 24, 2026—In a pointed rebuke to American Senator Ted Cruz, Nigerian lawmaker Senator Kawu Sumaila (Kano South) has urged international actors to avoid reducing the country’s multifaceted insecurity crisis to a religious conflict, warning that such framing risks inflaming tensions and complicating peace efforts.

Sumaila’s statement comes amid ongoing debates in Washington over Nigeria’s security situation and the government’s engagement of a US lobbying firm to highlight its counter-insurgency and protection efforts for all citizens, including Christians.

Senator Cruz recently criticized Nigeria’s decision to retain DCI Group, a public affairs firm, under a reported $9 million contract.

He accused Nigerian officials of prioritizing public relations over addressing concerns about violence against Christians and religious minorities, while referencing blasphemy laws and Sharia-related issues.

“Insecurity affects Muslims, Christians, and adherents of other faiths alike,” the senator emphasized, noting that criminals and insurgents often target communities indiscriminately for ransom, control, or ideological reasons.

Nigeria continues to grapple with violence from groups like Boko Haram and bandits, alongside farmer-herder clashes exacerbated by climate change, weak governance, and socio-economic factors.

Security forces, composed of personnel from diverse faiths, routinely combat these threats while protecting places of worship, schools, and markets for all citizens.

Sumaila cautioned that divisive external narratives could undermine interfaith cooperation and national unity at a time when collective efforts are needed.
