Oyo Police Nab Armed Robber, Recover Stolen Bike

Ibadan, Oyo State, July 18, 2026 - In a commendable display of rapid response and intelligence-driven policing, the Oyo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered a stolen commercial motorcycle in Ibadan, delivering relief to residents weary of violent crime targeting vulnerable workers.

The breakthrough came on Wednesday, July 16, 2026, around 11:30 a.m., when a public-spirited citizen alerted authorities that a commercial motorcyclist, identified as Muhammadu Kamilu, had been brutally attacked and dispossessed of his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (registration AJW 842 QU) by a passenger wielding an iron hammer along Adeniji Estate, Apata, Ibadan.

Operatives from the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) sprang into action, swiftly apprehending the suspect, Shafiu Nuhu, and recovering the stolen motorcycle along with the hammer allegedly used in the assault.

The victim sustained injuries from the hammer attack, as did Nathaniel Ibrahim, a brave good Samaritan who intervened to help.

Both were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

During interrogation, Nuhu reportedly confessed to operating as a lone armed robber, specializing in targeting commercial motorcyclists (popularly known as “okada” riders) across Ibadan and surrounding areas.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine his links to other similar crimes and to recover additional stolen items.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, psc, mnips, praised the vigilance of the good Samaritan and the prompt flow of credible intelligence from the public, which proved decisive.

He urged residents to remain security-conscious and continue collaborating with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities through official channels.

This arrest fits into the Oyo State Police Command’s sustained push against violent crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and banditry.

Recent operations have seen recoveries of firearms, rescues of abducted persons, and arrests of syndicates, often aided by community tips and inter-agency collaboration.
