INEC-NIMC Digital Pact Seals New Era of Clean, Credible Elections in Nigeria

ABUJA, Nigeria — In a significant move toward modernizing Nigeria’s electoral system, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) have forged a strategic digital alliance aimed at enhancing the credibility, transparency, and integrity of future elections.

The partnership was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by NIMC Director-General Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote and her management team to INEC headquarters in Abuja.

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, described the collaboration as crucial for building a more secure electoral framework.

Central to the alliance is the National Identity Management Commission Act, 2026, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 26, 2026.

The legislation transforms NIMC from a mere database custodian into Nigeria’s foundational digital identity authority, anchoring the nation’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and Root Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for secure transactions and governance.

Engr. Coker-Odusote highlighted how the new law will reduce fraud, simplify access to services, strengthen the digital economy, and — most importantly for INEC — improve identity verification in the electoral process.

“NIMC is ready to support INEC in delivering free, fair and transparent elections,” she stated.

Prof. Amupitan welcomed the development, noting that INEC’s new online Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) platform already mandates the use of National Identification Numbers (NIN) for verification.

Closer integration between the two agencies will help eliminate duplicate records, streamline registration, and bolster data integrity as Nigeria transitions deeper into the artificial intelligence era.

The INEC Chairman emphasized the need for robust safeguards and protocols to protect data systems.

Both leaders expressed optimism that this partnership will enhance public confidence in the electoral process and support broader digital governance across sectors like commerce, land administration, and public services.
