Federal Government Delegation Rushes Aid to Gas-Plagued Bille Community

Port Harcourt, Rivers State— In a significant show of federal responsiveness, a high-powered delegation from the Nigerian government descended on Bille Community in Degema Local Government Area on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, delivering immediate humanitarian relief and pledging a comprehensive, long-term solution to a persistent gas seepage crisis that has tormented residents for nearly a year.

Led by Senator Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), the team included Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), representatives from oil and gas operators, and other stakeholders.

The delegation first paid a courtesy visit to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara at Government House in Port Harcourt before proceeding to the riverine community.

Governor Fubara commended the collaborative effort, assuring Bille leaders and residents that their plight would receive the urgent attention it demands.

He further pledged the upgrade of the community’s Primary Healthcare Centre to better address emerging health challenges linked to the seepage.

Bille, a fishing-dependent community of approximately 30,000 people accessible primarily by water, has been grappling with gas leaks since October 2025.

Residents first noticed bubbling in nearby mangrove swamps, rivers, and drinking wells, accompanied by a strong sulphurous smell.

The issue, linked to abandoned oil and gas infrastructure in the area (within Oil Mining Lease 18 corridor), has since expanded, contaminating water sources and disrupting daily life.

Locals describe scenes of gas bubbling from boreholes, wells, and even near homes.

Fires have erupted spontaneously, forcing panic and displacement. Children have suffered rashes, vomiting, and respiratory issues; schools have been temporarily relocated.

Fishermen report declining catches, and many families struggle for safe drinking water. One resident captured the fear: “You just smell gas. The next thing, there’s fire.”

Amnesty International and local groups like the Ijaw Youth Council raised alarms earlier in 2026, urging immediate investigation and intervention to prevent a full-blown environmental and health disaster in the Niger Delta.

Images from the visit show the delegation in formal engagements with community leaders, including traditional rulers in ceremonial attire, and cultural displays of solidarity with drummers and youth groups.

Stacks of relief materials—food items and other essentials—were visibly assembled for distribution, offering a tangible first step amid ongoing hardship.

The Federal Government has also engaged foreign experts for a thorough probe into the seepage’s causes and extent.

Officials emphasized that this is not merely a short-term palliative but part of a broader commitment to restore normalcy, safeguard lives, and mitigate environmental damage in oil-producing regions.

This episode underscores the enduring challenges of legacy infrastructure, regulatory oversight, and community impacts in Nigeria’s oil and gas heartland.

While the swift high-level response signals progress in inter-governmental and industry collaboration, questions remain about long-term prevention, accountability for past neglect, and sustainable development for affected communities.

For Bille residents, yesterday’s visit brings cautious hope after months of anxiety.

As one community voice put it in earlier appeals, the call has long been simple: “Stop the gas pollution before it kills us finish.”

The NUPRC and relevant operators are expected to provide regular updates as investigations deepen and remediation efforts accelerate.

For now, the people of Bille await concrete results—clean water, restored health, and a return to the fishing livelihood that has defined their kingdom for generations.
