Fresh cracks have emerged within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as Labour Party chieftain Dr. Abayomi Arabambi questioned Peter Obi’s political future.

Speaking on ARISE News, Arabambi warned that Obi should not regard the NDC as a permanent refuge after leaving the Labour Party.

He argued that unresolved internal disputes and lingering grievances within the Labour Party could continue to shadow Obi politically.

According to Arabambi, political actors cannot destabilize a platform and simply move on without facing consequences from aggrieved stakeholders.

According to him, political structures cannot be weakened and abandoned without consequences.

He maintained that many stakeholders within the Labour Party remain dissatisfied with the developments that preceded Obi’s departure and could eventually challenge his political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

His comments come amid a major political realignment that has reshaped the opposition camp.

Peter Obi, who finished third in Nigeria’s fiercely contested 2023 presidential election, was recently affirmed as the presidential candidate of the NDC for the 2027 general election.

He subsequently announced former Kano State governor and political heavyweight, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate, creating one of the most talked-about alliances in the country’s political space.

The Obi-Kwankwaso ticket has generated excitement among supporters who view it as a strategic North-South partnership capable of challenging the ruling establishment.

However, it has also sparked criticism from political opponents who argue that electoral success requires more than popular appeal and social media momentum.

Arabambi stressed that no politician can impose himself on the electorate without broad-based acceptance across Nigeria’s diverse political and regional blocs.

He added that governance, transparency, accountability, and the fight against corruption would remain central issues that voters would consider when the campaign season eventually begins.

Political analysts believe the 2027 race is already shaping into a battle of coalitions, personalities, and regional interests.

While Obi’s emergence under the NDC banner signals a new chapter for the opposition, questions remain over whether the various anti-establishment forces can remain united long enough to mount a formidable challenge in the next presidential election.
